Consumer Behavior in Sequential Search — The Role of Imperfect Recall

Abstract

In this thesis I study sequential consumer search. I first introduce consumer search and then introduce the sequential consumer search model of Weitzman (1979). The model of Weitzman (1979) only considers search where the searcher can take any of the previously searched options upon ending the search. In this thesis I consider a model, where the consumer loses previously searched options as the search goes on, and I try to build intuition towards how this could affect the search. What I find is that, if the consumer follows the optimal policy from Weitzman (1979) then it is likely that the search ends faster.

Tässä opinnäytetyössä tutkin kuluttajan peräkkäistä etsintää. Ensimmäiseksi esittelen, mitä etsintä on, jonka jälkeen esittelen Weitzmanin (1979) peräkkäisen kuluttajan etsintämallin. Weitzmanin (1979) malli käsittelee etsintää vain tapauksessa, jossa etsijällä on mahdollisuus hyödyntää mitä tahansa tutkimaansa vaihtoehtoa etsinnän päätyttäessä. Tässä opinnäytetyössä tutkin etsintämallia, jossa kuluttaja saattaa menettää aikaisemmin tutkittuja vaihtoehtoja etsinnän edetessä. Pyrin myös lisäämään ymmärrystä kuinka tällainen malli voisi vaikuttaa etsintään. Osoitan, että mikäli etsijä noudattaa Weitzmanin (1979) optimaalista strategiaa, niin tässä mallissa etsijä päättää etsinnän nopeammin.
