Abstract
Adaptive reuse has become one of the methods of architectural climate action in the past decades. As a building strategy, it is not only beneficial in terms of reducing environmental consequences of the construction industry, but it also provides a possibility for already existing urban environments to develop, thrive and evolve by preserving the historical and cultural value of current urban landscapes. This thesis work aims to provide a concrete example of adaptive reuse by means of architectural design in two chronological scenarios. The focus is on a rather unknown, but nevertheless historically significant building of Oma Apu warehouse, that is located in Joensuu, Eastern Finland, and was originally designed by Heimo Riihimäki in 1938. This thesis work is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter includes an introduction to the thesis and its methodology. The second chapter provides a deeper historical and urban context of Joensuu. The third chapter focuses on the target building of Oma Apu warehouse. The analysis provides a deeper understanding of the project and underlines the important identity aspects for the focus area and the building itself. The fourth chapter of this thesis introduces and analyses relevant case studies. The fifth chapter formulates two scenarios of a room programme for the target building. The room programmes are defined based on the interests of the municipality in possible future strategies for the building’s use and also on the author’s analyses as well as architectural knowledge gained through studies. The sixth chapter of the work contains an adaptive reuse design proposal for the focus building according to two possible future scenarios. The last chapter contains the reflection of the working process. The design proposal of this thesis aims to underline the unique features of the focus building and maintain its significance in its urban environment, while at the same time intends to shift the purpose and space arrangement of the building so that it can reach higher potential of spatial use in the frames of new needs of the city, official public space requirements along with urban and cultural level of the area. Another goal of the design proposal is to rethink the aesthetical standard of the building, so that its historical characteristics would intertwine with modern architectural language.Rakennusten uudelleensuunnittelu on yksi keinoista torjua ilmastonmuutosta rakennusalalla arkkitehtuurin keinoin. Suunnittelustrategiana se ei ainoastaan vähennä uudelleenrakentamisen päästöjä, vaan myös tukee olemassa olevien alueiden ja historiallisesti merkittävien rakennusten sekä niiden kulttuurillisten arvojen säilymistä. Tämä diplomityö hyödyntää Heimo Riihimäen suunnittelemaa, vuonna 1939 rakennettua, Joensuussa sijaitsevaa Oma Apu -varastorakennusta konkreettisena esimerkkinä muuntojoustavuuden tarkastelemisessa arkkitehtuurissa. Tämä diplomityö jakautuu seitsemään lukuun. Ensimmäisessä luvussa esitellään työn johdanto sekä diplomityön tavoitteet. Toisessa luvussa selostetaan Joensuun historiallista ja kaupungillista kontekstia. Kolmannessa luvussa keskitytään Oma Avun -varastorakennukseen ja sen ominaisuuksiin, jotka määrittelevät itse rakennusta ja täten diplomityön arkkitehtuurisuunnittelua. Neljännessä luvussa käydään läpi työlle relevantteja esimerkkikohteita. Viidennessä luvussa käsitellään työn kahden suunnitteluvaihtoehdon tilaohjelmia. Tilaohjelmia määrittelee niin kaupungin tulevaisuuden tarpeet kuin kirjoittajan arkkitehtoninen tietämys ja mieltymykset. Kuudes luku käsittelee muuntojoustavuuden ja uudelleensuunnittelun periaatteita Oma Apu -rakennuksen kahdessa suunnitteluvaihtoehdossa. Viimeisessä luvussa reflektoidaan suunnitteluprosessia ja diplomityön tulosta. Tämän työn suunnitelmaehdotukset pyrkivät korostamaan kohderakennuksen erityispiirteitä sekä säilyttämään sen arvoa kaupunkiympäristössä tarjoten samalla tiloja kaupungille ja Joensuun kulttuuriselle elämälle niiden tulevaisuuden tarpeisiin. Suunnittelutyötä ohjaa myös kohderakennuksen arkkitehtuurin uudelleenajattelu vanhaa ja uutta arkkitehtuurin tyyliä sekoittaen.Description
