dc.description.abstractThis study investigates how thermal imaging can be used to detect heat losses in building elements, focusing on the comparison between qualitative visual interpretations and quantitative surface temperature measurement. Thermal images were collected with the FLIR E6 thermal camera and used to analyse data from an old 1970s red brick building. The qualitative analysis reveals visible patterns of heat losses, including water and air infiltrations, and thermal bridging in poorly insulated areas. The quantitative analysis reveals borderline compliance with the old regulations, while the floor demonstrated unreliable results. The findings highlight the role of thermal imaging as a diagnostic tool to identify energy inefficiency in old buildings, with some challenges. Furthermore, this study discusses the implications of these findings in the context of building renovation or demolition, considering energy performance. The results suggest that thermal imaging not only assists in assessing the locations of the heat losses but also informs critical decision-making on building practices.en
