Abstract

Research has proven that increased design maturity has a direct impact on the business results of an organisation. At the forefront of a push for higher design maturity is design leadership, however, there is little research on how and if they utilise any tools and frameworks for this purpose. This thesis is based on interviews with ten design leaders from five originally non-design organisations. All interviewed design leaders consider increasing design maturity important and beneficial, however, they mostly don’t utilise any direct metrics and the existing design maturity models as they don’t find them beneficial. A few want to start measuring design maturity, but they are still in the process of finding the best way how to do it. In terms of challenges for increasing design maturity, they mostly face a lack of resources and resistance in the non-design part of the company. They try to overcome these obstacles by sharing success stories and increasing design awareness.
