Abstract

The success of Building Information Modeling (BIM) projects relies on effective coordination among multidisciplinary teams. However, the current formal coordination mechanisms may not be sufficient to address all the complexities of the BIM design process. This study explores the role of informal or ad-hoc coordination in complementing existing formal mechanism. Through semi-structured interviews with seven design coordination professionals and thematic analysis, the study reveals that informal coordination plays a critical role in bridging the gap and challenges recognised formal meetings. However, challenges such as the absence of documentation and varying levels of individual proactivity persist. The study proposes a hybrid coordination framework that integrates informal coordination with formal mechanisms, utilizing real-time communication tools, standardized documentation, frequent formal meetings, and training to improve efficiency, adaptability, and interdisciplinary collaboration in construction projects.
