Abstract

This written thesis is a part of an experimental animated documentary project, which contains two exhibitions, one VR experience, and one short film. The main research of this project is to find ways to express memory and the emotions of loss through artwork. When making this project, I discovered the value of the developing process and the playful spirit of experimenting in this personal project were as or even more important than the artwork. Therefore in this written thesis, the main focus will be put on how the process went and how the experimental tests led to another and finally formed the final artwork. The experimental techniques such as different kinds of under camera animation and experimentation on analog film will also be found in this written thesis.

Other note

Media files notes: The artistic part of the thesis. Description: BRIEF SYNOPSIS of the film: This is a film about a daughter’s feelings of losing her father. Like the scenery from a running train, memories are beautiful, blurry and keep changing. In this experimental animated documentary, the author mixed video footage and analog film with animation techniques, and brought a diary-like atmosphere to immerse the audience in the unspeakable feelings of losing a loved one.
