Abstract
The planning area of this Master’s thesis is Fanjunkars croft, its yard and the park area in front, located in Siuntio. Fanjunkars, which served as the home of writer Aleksis Kivi from 1864 to 1871, was a croft belonging to the Sjundby manor. He lived there with Charlotta Lönnqvist, who owned the croft at the time. While living in Fanjunkars, Kivi wrote most of his work, including his most famous work Seitsemän veljestä. The current croft is not the original – it was destroyed during Porkkala Naval Base between 1944-1956 and new building was rebuilt between 2003-2006. At present the croft works as a cultural center, museum and space for different kinds of events. The aim of this thesis is to outline how the Fanjunkars yard was like and to make a development and management plan, which is based on the interesting history of the yard’s previous residents and garden. The aim is also to think how locals could work together in the garden and be part of its future story.
The work is divided into three parts. The first part examines the history of the croft and its yard, the second part explores what the place is like today, and the third part presents the development and management plan for Fanjunkars.
There is limited information about the former appearance of the yard, so the work also examines the development of croft yards in Finland and especially in Siuntio. With literature review this thesis outlines what the yard of Fanjunkars was like in the 19th and 20th centuries. The focus of the examination of the yard is the previous owner Charlotta Lönnqvist (1815–1891). This thesis concludes that the garden was more diverse than the average garden around the croft, because it was located in a wealthy Swedish-speaking area and the owner was a versatile woman who worked as a caterer, had close connections to the area’s nobility and also left her mark on the yard’s garden.
The development and management plan of the master’s thesis is based on observations made in the previous stages of the work. The plan draws from the past, but also pays attention to today’s needs and encourages locals to work together at culturally and historically significant place. The base of the development and management plan has been the interesting history of the croft and its central location in Siuntio. The plan pays attention to how to get the locals involved in the establishment and maintenance of the garden. The traditional plants to Fanjunkars will be collected from local plants through plant announcements, and because of that the garden will also tell a wider story about the gardening history in Siuntio. While making the thesis it was discovered that the yard has many stories to tell, which can be brought out while respecting the history of the place and involving today’s locals.
