Abstract

Monitoring is a broad concept and it can be used in multitude of ways in order to benefit companies and stakeholders. However, it is not used to a great extend in the field of RFID testing. This thesis reviews how other companies are using different monitoring methods. Then, a list of the most important aspects that should be kept in mind when implementing a monitoring system were constructed. Finally, requirements for a monitoring system that is feasible to implement and would generate value to the stakeholders were defined. The research questions were answered by conducting a brief literature review and a qualitative research which consisted of stakeholder analysis, seven semi-structured interviews, and a thematic analysis. The results indicate that monitoring is used successfully in the manufacturing industry and that it is accepted on some level in the field of RFID testing as well. However, there exists many aspects in monitoring that must be taken into account while implementing a monitoring system such as security, privacy, and transparency. The thesis lists five possible ways of generating new value or solving existing pain points in a form of value propositions and further suggest an initial high-level design for the possible monitoring system. Monitoring RFID testing equipment is not a necessity but rather a great opportunity that should be utilized. The ideas and designs introduced in this thesis should be evaluated and prototyped to make sure that those are something that the stakeholders really need.

Monitorointi on laaja käsite ja sitä voidaan käyttää hyödyksi lukuisilla eri tavoilla yrityksen tai sidosryhmien hyödyksi. Monitorointi ei kuitenkaan ole laajassa käytössä RFID-testauksen yhteydessä. Tässä työssä pyrittiin tarkastelemaan kuinka yritykset käyttävät monitorointia hyödykseen. Toisena tavoitteena oli muodostaa lista asioista, jotka tulisi ottaa huomioon monitorointiratkaisua toteuttaessa. Tutkimuskysymyksiin vastattiin suorittamalla kirjallisuuskatsaus sekä kvalitatiivinen tutkimus. Kvalitatiivinen tutkimus koostui sidosryhmien analysoimisesta, seitsemästä osittain jäsennellystä haastattelusta sekä temaattisesta analyysista. Työn tulokset osoittavat, että moni yritys käyttää monitorointia hyödykseen onnistuneesti ja se hyväksytään jo osittain RFID-testauksen alalla. Monitorointia toteutettaessa täytyy kuitenkin pitää mielessä monta näkökohtaa kuten turvallisuus, yksityisyys ja läpinäkyvyys. Tässä työssä on listattu viisi mahdollista tapaa luoda uutta arvoa asiakkaalle arvolupausten avulla. Lisäksi työssä on esitetty korkean tason arkkitehtuuri, mikä pyrkii auttamaan toteutuksen aloittamisessa RFID-testauksessa monitorointi ei ole pakollinen toiminnallisuus mutta se on kuitenkin valtava mahdollisuus, joka tulisi käyttää hyödyksi. Ideat ja vaatimukset, jotka tämä työ on esittänyt tulisi arvioida esimerkiksi valmistamalla prototyyppejä. Näin voidaan varmistaa, että tuote tai palvelu, on jotain, mitä asiakas oikeasti tarvitsee.
