Abstract

This thesis explores the role of artificial intelligence (AI) personalization in shaping user-centered user interface (UI) design through a systematic literature review. As AI informs design decisions increasingly, its integration into UI development raises questions about usability and user engagement. The study systematically reviews 31 peer-reviewed articles published between 2023 and early 2025 to investigate the way through which AI personalization tools enhance or challenge traditional user-centered design (UCD) principles. The findings reveal that AI enhances several stages of the UCD process through the enablement of adaptive interfaces and real-time feedback. However, challenges persist around explainability, user autonomy, algorithmic bias, and ethical transparency. While AI offers various opportunities to scale and customize user experiences, the literature reviewed suggests that AI integrations tend to be more usable and trustworthy when they are guided by user-centered values. This thesis proposes that AI should augment rather than replace user involvement and emphasizes the importance of transparency and fairness in the design of personalized systems.
