Abstract

In today's top-performance companies, a fast delivery time involves organizational capability and a way of thinking about how to organize and lead a company, and how to gain real advantage over competitors. The purpose of this study is to formulate a fast delivery concept for rubber-tired gantry cranes manufactured by the case company. The theoretical part of the study starts with the building of a general model for configuring an optimal architecture to enable a fast delivery time. Company organization, management and supply chain along with key features in product design and optimal delivery process characteristics is examined. All these counterparts are strongly interrelated, which is also the main finding in the literature review. Furthermore, an agile supplier network has to be based on a few partnerships and focus on activities that provide added value to the customer. The organization also has to be essentially process-based without any artificial functional hierarchies and boundaries preventing a fluent flow of information. Finally, an implementation plan for the transition effort towards a fast-cycle company is presented. The empirical part starts with a review of the current delivery architecture of the case company and the delivery process of its product. A vision of an optimal delivery process is constructed and gaps to the existing situation identified. The reliability of the fast delivery model is partly tested by way of analysis of core reasons for delivery delays and rectifying actions implemented earlier. An enhancement to the model is provided based on the results of the case review. A key finding of this study is that the quality of activities during the start of delivery will strongly correlate with the organization's performance in later stages of the process. Customer input needs to be reliably converted into the supply chain, in order to avoid the risk of increased delivery delays. Product standardization and modularity as well as the efficiency of sales activities have a strong impact on the implementation speed of the start-up activities. Based on the findings of the study, a pragmatic set of recommendations concerning the case company and the reviewed product is presented. Recommendations can also be generally applied to applications manufactured by other companies.
