Collaborating towards circularity: Exploring the role of collaboration in systemic change towards a circular economy of textiles in Finland

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the role of collaboration in circular business model adoption and transformation in the Finnish textile industry. The study explores barriers and challenges faced in the collaborative process and identifies potential areas of improvement in collaborative processes to make them more effective. The study assesses the extent of the role of collaboration on micro and meso level systemic change.

The focus of this study is the Finnish textile industry. The study conducted interviews of experts in the textile industry who have had collaboration experiences in their company, or are in collaborative partnerships. The collected data was analysed using thematic analysis. The empirical findings outlined enablers and purposes of collaborative processes, the barriers and challenges that are preventing transformation, and what the research participants hope to happen in the future to mitigate these challenges.

The findings of this study are that collaboration is considered to be important in the adoption process of circularity, but there are a number of barriers and challenges that are preventing collaborative ventures from being as effective as they could be. These barriers include challenges in resource constraints, bad organizational culture, and a lack of clarity in regulation. Policy implications of this research is that there should be work done to clarify existing regulation, and cater regulation more for SMEs as current regulation does not take the needs of small firms into account. Managerial implications include using more effective collaborative processes, such as workshops focused on key leverage points such as circular design rather than circularity on a wider scale.

Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tutkia yhteistyön roolia kiertotalouskäytäntöjen omaksumisessa suomalaisessa tekstiiliteollisuudessa. Tutkimuksessa selvitetään yhteistyöprosessin esteitä ja haasteita sekä tunnistetaan mahdollisia parannusalueita yhteistyöprosesseissa, jotta niistä saataisiin tehokkaampia. Tutkimuksessa arvioidaan myös yhteistyön roolin tärkeyttä mikro- ja mesotason systeemimuutoksessa.

Tutkimuskohteena on suomalainen tekstiiliteollisuus. Tutkimuksessa haastateltiin alan asiantuntijoita, joilla on yhteistyökokemuksia yrityksessään tai jotka ovat yhteistyökumppanuuksissa. Kerätty aineisto analysoitiin temaattisen analyysin avulla. Empiirisissä tuloksissa hahmoteltiin yhteistyöprosessien mahdollistajia ja syitä lähteä yhteistyöprosessiin, muutosta estäviä esteitä ja haasteita sekä sitä, mitä asiantuntijat toivovat tapahtuvan tulevaisuudessa näiden haasteiden lieventämiseksi.

Tutkimustulokset osoittavat, että yhteistyötä pidetään tärkeänä kiertotalouden käyttöönottoprosessissa, mutta olemassa olevat esteet ja haasteet estävät yhteistyöhankkeita olemasta niin tehokkaita kuin ne voisivat olla. Näitä esteitä ovat muun muassa resurssirajoitteisiin liittyvät haasteet, huono organisaatiokulttuuri ja vihreän sääntelyn epäselvyys. Tämän tutkimuksen poliittiset vaikutukset ovat seuraavat: nykyistä sääntelyä olisi selkeytettävä ja sääntelyä olisi mukautettava enemmän pk-yrityksiä varten, sillä nykyisessä sääntelyssä ei oteta huomioon pk- yritysten tarpeita. Johtamiseen liittyviin vaikutuksiin kuuluu tehokkaampien yhteistyöprosessien käyttö, kuten työpajat, joissa keskitytään keskeisiin vipupisteisiin, kuten kiertotalouden mukaiseen suunnitteluun, eikä niinkään laajamittaiseen kierrätykseen.
