Abstract

This study examined the use of management control systems (MCS) in SMEs using empirical data gathered from Finnish SME in the accounting and auditing sector. Empirical data was gathered by conducting interviews with the case company representative and analyzing the gathered information using Malmi’s and Brown’s (2008) MCS as a package framework. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the adaptation and utilization of MCS and gain an understanding how MCS are implemented and the challenges companies encounter while trying to influence employee behavior and foster goal congruence. The findings of this study support the approach of investigating MCS as a package, as control systems were observed to be interconnected and influencing each other. Cultural controls and especially values were found to be the predominant form of control within the case company.

Tässä tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin johdon ohjausjärjestelmien käyttöä pk-yrityksissä käyttäen kirjanpito- ja tilintarkastusalan pk-yrityksestä kerättyä empiiristä aineistoa. Empiirinen aineisto kerättiin tekemällä haastatteluja case-yrityksen edustajan kanssa. Kerättyä tietoa analysoitiin käyttäen Malmin ja Brownin (2008) MCS as a Package viitekehystä. Tämän opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on tutkia johdon ohjausjärjestelmien hyödyntämistä, sekä saada ymmärrystä siitä, miten johdon ohjausjärjestelmiä hyödynnetään ja millaisia haasteita yritykset kohtaavat yrittäessään vaikuttaa työntekijöiden käyttäytymiseen käyttäen johdon ohjausjärjestelmiä. Tämän tutkimuksen tulokset tukevat johdon ohjausjärjestelmien tutkimista kokonaisuutena, sillä ohjausjärjestelmien havaittiin olevan yhteydessä toisiinsa ja vaikuttavan toisiinsa vahvasti. Kulttuuristen ohjausjärjestelmien ja erityisesti arvojen havaittiin olevan hallitsevia kontrollimuotoja tutkitussa yrityksessä.
