dc.description.abstractThis thesis investigates how publication design can be used to communicate the values of the organization in order to motivate readers. It explores existing practices, identifies challenges and opportunities related to magazine design as communication tool. The work specifically studies design process, exploring the transitional moment of transmitting ideas and concepts into visuals, what affects the designer when making design decisions and how editorial design performs when done and published. The thesis is grounded in the methodological framework of Me- dia Concept design tool developed by Maija Töyry and empathic design methods. The thesis research was carried out during creation of the Ympäristö magazine issued by the Finnish Ministry of the Envi- ronment and The Finnish Environment Institute. Overall, the new visual identity and 5 issues of the magazine were designed by the author. The thesis discusses the identified challenges and opportunities of magazine to affect a reader's values. Further, it presents short checklist of points to consider in order to achieve the goal.en
