Abstract
Maisterin opinnäytetyö An Echo koostuu kirjallisesta ja taiteellisesta osasta. Taiteellinen osa pitää sisällään valokuvateokset Doppelgänger ja Substitutes ja videoteoksen An Echo. Doppelgänger -sarja muodostuu minun ja veljeni välisestä kuvadialogista, jota kävimme asuessamme eri mantereilla. Substitutes –sarjaani kuvasin fiktiivisiä perhepotretteja ihmisten kanssa, jotka muistuttivat minua veljestäni. Performatiivinen videoteos An Echo, jossa esiinnyn veljeni kanssa käsittelee koreografi Anna Maria Häkkisen avustuksella sisarsuhteen kompleksista luonnetta ja identiteettien yhteenkietoutumista. Nämä taiteellisen osion kaikki kolme teosta tarkastelevat hieman eri näkökulmista sisarsuhteen symbioottisuutta, sukupuolta ja sen liukumista kohti androgyniaa. Tavoitteena oli nostaa esiin sukupuolen erilaisia esittämisen tapoja, erityisesti androgyniaa, ja tehdä siitä tämän näkyvyyden avulla hyväksyttävämpää. Teosten synnyssä intuitio oli merkittävässä roolissa, koska sen avulla tulin tietoiseksi sisarsuhteeni symbioottisesta laadusta ja sukupuolitekijöistä. Kirjallinen osa An Echo – Tutkimuksia sukupuolen performatiivisuudesta ja sisarsuhteen symbioottisuudesta avaa taiteellista prosessia kronologisessa järjestyksessä kietoen yhteen sukupuolen käsitteen tarkastelua feminististen keskustelujen pohjalta. Keskiössä on Judith Butlerin teoria sukupuolen performatiivisuudesta. Teksti avaa lyhyesti myös androgynian käsitettä ja sen ilmentymistä taiteellisessa työskentelyssä. Videoteoksen An Echo yhteydessä teksti perehtyy kehotaiteen ja performanssitaiteen eroavuuksiin sekä pohtii sisarsuhteen symbioottisuutta. Opinnäytetyön taiteellisen ja kirjallisen osion tärkeimpinä havaintoina nousivat esiin sukupuoli-identiteetin liukuva luonne ja intuition merkittävä rooli taiteellisessa prosessissa. Opinnäytetyö An Echo perustelee, että intuition avulla on mahdollista tuoda arvokasta tietoa tiedostamattomalta tasolta.The Master’s thesis An Echo consists of a textual part and an artistic part. The artistic part includes two photographic series titled Doppelgänger and Substitutes and the video work An Echo. Doppelgänger is a visual dialogue that I had with my brother while living in different continents. For the Substitutes series I photographed fictional family portraits with people who reminded me of my brother. The video work An Echo, in which I perform with my brother with the assistance of choreographer Anna Maria Häkkinen, deals with the complex nature of sibling relationships and entwined identities. All three works comprising the artistic part of the thesis examine symbiosis, gender and the drift towards androgyny. The aim was to present different ways of per-forming gender, especially androgyny, and through this increased visibility to make it more publicly acceptable. The textual part An Echo - Studies of Gender Performativity and Sibling Symbiosis examines the artistic process in a chronological manner, entwining the concept of gender with feminist discussion. Judith Butler's theory of gender performance is at the core. The text then opens up the concept of androgyny and its role in an artistic process. In case of the video work An Echo the differences between body art and performance art are explored, and the notion of sibling symbiosis is considered. The main observations of the thesis were the drifting nature of identity and the significant role of intuition in an artistic process. The thesis An Echo argues that it is possible to achieve valuable knowledge on an unconscious level.Description
