Abstract
There are vast amounts of empty office space in Helsinki while the need for housing is rising. The option for converting the space is obvious, yet there are obstacles from many aspects such as legislative barriers. This thesis is not trying to sweep all the obstacles standing in the way of transformation, rather focusing on how could we do to reinvigorate the underutilized space through design approaches. By analyzing the economical statistic about vacant office space, the city planning for the future and existing urban context, I picked Merihaka high-rise building and its annex as the studying object for spatial transformation from office to dwelling. The influence derived from converting the space of Merihaka residential area and changing of surrounding built environment will also be considered as part of the transformation process. The action of converting most likely need to establish a redefinition about the building itself as well as the relationship with surrounding environment. To establish the new meaning, the existing history of the built environment and uniqueness of the place should be taken into consideration. From the standpoint of housing, the creation of a livable, vibrant and sustainable community is needed in order to complete the spatial transformation.Description
