Abstract

Hemicelluloses are the second largest group of chemical compounds in wood and have a significant role in pulp manufacturing. The objective of this study was to develop an online measurement method for xylan using near- and mid-infrared spectroscopy. The IR-units were part of PulpExpert analyzer which can measure many fiber characteristics. Additionally, the aim of the research was to study how different fiber characteristics affect pulp refinability later in the process. Refinability was studied with the help of multivariate analysis and online xylan measurement that was developed. Online measurement models were successfully created for both modules. The NIR-module's prediction capability was poorer. In all, the MIR-module performed better and was less sensitive to interference. Refinability analysis produced no remarkable results. Multivariate analysis showed known correlations which suggested that the analysis was performed adequately.
