Abstract

The subject of this diploma thesis is to design a new building for Architecture and Design Museum in Helsinki South Port. The design task is based on the New Museum of Architecture and Design competition 2024. The goal is to design a unique museum building that redefines Hesinki as a destination for architecture, design, arts and culture, as well asd a hub for expertise and learing, and a meeting place and attraction for local and global visitors. The spatial program of the museum was drawn up based on the competition brief and the gross area of the building is 10,050 m2. The diploma thesis is divided into five parts. The first part is an overview of the museum background and objectives of the design task. The second part is a review of the museum development from architectural point of view, as well as its references. The third part analyzes the context of the site, surrounding and the city. After that, the developed space program and concept sketches with analysis will be presented. Finally a finished drawing set is presented. The diploma thesis focuses on the relationship of the building to the cultural landscape and creates a new center as the intersection which connects the city and nature, busting and tranquility, design and life, history and future. The building volume needs to meet the spatial planning requirements, while not destroying the existing important coastal urban landscape planning principles, which will be another challenge that the diploma thesis needs to solve.
