Abstract

Information-Centric Networking (ICN) introduces a paradigm shift from a host centric communication model for Future Internet architecture. The main goal of this paradigm shift is to improve the content distribution of a huge amount of digital content in the current Internet. In addition, the retrieval of a particular content within a minimal amount of time is also considered as another design goal. To achieve this goal, ICN supports the retrieval of a particular content regardless of the physical location of the content and introduces in-network caching services. However, The delay/disruption tolerance of ICN architecture in a fragmented network has become a crucial issue. Besides this, the domain of Internet of Things (IoT) is another crucial issue which should be considered in the design of ICN since IoT is expected to interconnect billions of (usually constrained) devices that generate vast amounts of information.   In this dissertation, we have considered DTN and IoT as a challenged Internet. In the first phase of this dissertation, we look at the potential benefits and feasibility of deploying the delay tolerant network functionality into the infrastructural ICN network and vice versa. In the second phase, we look at the possibility of deploying the existing IP-based IoT solutions over ICN so that ICN features can be exploited to improve the performance of the existing IP protocols in IoT.
