Comparison between the static and dynamic linear-elastic seismic analysis methods in the design of storage silos and conveyor bridges

Abstract

The equivalent lateral force (ELF) method and the response spectrum analysis (RSA) method are seismic analysis methods assuming linear-elastic force-displacement behaviour to determine the structural response of a system, both of which are using response spectra as their input. The equivalent lateral force method is often used as a preliminary tool and provides a simplified approach to view the challenging dynamic problem as a series of static problems. The response spectrum analysis is a dynamic method using the modal analysis of the structure to solve the seismic parameters. This thesis conducts a comparison between the linear-elastic ELF and RSA seismic analysis methods using typical steel structures manufactured by the collaborative partner Raumaster Oy including conveyor bridges and storage silos. The compared structures have a set of different properties, where the silos often are squat and symmetrical in their geometry, the conveyor bridges are large in proportions and behave differently in their principal orthogonal directions. The study is carried out by firstly conducting a theoretical literature review, and secondly executing two case studies, one for conveyor bridge and one for a fly ash silo. The programs used in the comparison are ‘RFEM 5’ and ‘RFEM 6’, as one of the objectives of the thesis is to provide the client company with an instruction on utilization of the seismic analysis methods in the ‘RFEM 6’ program. Resulting on the study, few notions can be made. Firstly, for the empty silo structure both methods are viable, as the error margin between the methods is minimal. The ELF method generally provides a more conservative result. However, as the response of the stored material is accounted, the problem no longer lies between the analysis methods, but in the lack of knowledge on the oscillation of the stored material. The conveyor bridge is not suitable for ELF method, as the principal directions behave significantly different under seismic action.

Korvausvoima- ja vastespektrimenetelmä ovat maanjäristysmitoituksessa käytettäviä menetelmiä, jotka perustuvat oletukseen lineaaris-elastisesta voima-siirtymä suhteesta ja käyttävät vastespektrejä syötteinään. Korvausvoimamenetelmä on usein alustava suunnittelutyökalu ja tarjoaa yksinkertaistetun lähestymistavan haastavan dynaamisen ongelman ratkaisuun sarjana staattisia ongelmia. Vastespektrimenetelmä on dynaaminen menetelmä, joka hyödyntää moodianalyysia ja moodien superpositiota seismisten parametrien ratkaisussa. Tässä diplomityössä vertaillaan lineaaris-elastisia korvausvoima- ja vastespektrimenetelmiä tyypillisten yhteistyökumppaniyrityksen teräsrakenteiden suunnittelussa. Vertailtavat teräsrakenteet ovat kuljetinsiltoja ja siiloja. Vertailtavien rakenteiden välillä on vaihtelevia ominaisuuksia; siilot ovat usein matalia ja symmetrisiä geometrialtaan. Kuljetinsillat taas ovat mittasuhteiltaan suuria ja käyttäytyvät hyvin eri tavalla horisontaalisissa pääsuunnissaan. Tutkimus aloitetaan suorittamalla teoreettinen kirjallisuuskatsaus, jonka jälkeen suoritetaan kaksi case-tapausta, siilolle ja kuljetinsillalle. Työssä käytettävät ohjelmat ovat ’RFEM 5’ ja ’RFEM 6’, sillä yksi työn tavoitteista on luoda ohjeistus seismisten menetelmien käytöstä ’RFEM 6’ ohjelman sisällä. Työn tuloksena voidaan tehdä muutamia päätelmiä. Tyhjälle siilorakenteelle molemmat menetelmät ovat sopivia, sillä virhemarginaali menetelmien välillä on minimaalinen. Yleisesti voidaan sanoa korvausvoimamenetelmän antavan konservatiivisempiä tuloksia. Kun siilon sisällä varastoitavan materiaalin vaste maanjäristysherätteeseen huomioidaan, ongelmia aiheuttaa tiedonpuute materiaalin käyttäytymisestä siilon sisäseiniä vasten, eikä kyse enää ole menetelmien välisestä ongelmasta. Kuljetinsillat eivät sovellu korvausvoimamenetelmälle, sillä ne käyttäytyvät huomattavan eri tavoin horisontaalisissa pääsuunnissaan.
