Abstract

Heartbreak is an endless creative force seen in both modern and ancient art. This thesis provides a look into the process of art fueled by heartbreak. The research consists of my process of three acrylic paintings created during a romantic breakup, a reflection on how I chose and used paintings and sculptures from the 1800s as a reference, and an interview with singer/songwriter Vesta about her process. When painting, I aimed to distract myself from the heartbreak I was experiencing and to reflect on my emotions. The literature referenced shows the significant impact that romantic breakups have on people and the importance of coping skills. A common feature of both Vesta’s and my process was exceeding oneself and creating something beautiful out of a sometimes ugly experience.
