Dynamic optimization of the operation of mass-impregnated cables in a bipolar high-voltage direct current connection

Abstract

Cross-border high-voltage direct current (HVDC) connections are important for securing the supply and balancing the increasingly volatile and interconnected power transmission systems. Their submarine mass-impregnated non-draining (MIND) cables are estimated to suffer from increased dielectric stresses due to the increasingly volatile power flow. For ensuring their reliability and avoiding highly expensive breakdowns, operational restrictions have been typically applied. However, they can prevent HVDC connections from supporting to balance the supply and demand over a wide area, which is essential in the future green energy system. The first aim of this thesis to develop an algorithm for dynamic and optimal power flow control of the bipolar Fenno-Skan 1 and 2 HVDC connection by minimizing dielectric stresses within their submarine MIND cables while allowing full transmission capacity. The second objective is to update a stress point system developed by Fingrid Oyj. The developed algorithm uses the updated stress point system to test power distribution options obtained from total Fenno-Skan 1 and 2 power flows ordered by the day-ahead markets. The updated system tracks stressful events from voltage and current measurements and rates them according to their estimated stress level. As a result, the algorithm generates a power distribution profile that results in minimized total number of stress points. To test the dynamico ptimization performance of the algorithm, power profiles were generated for each calendar day over multiple years, and the yearly stress point accumulations were compared with the static profile currently in use. As a main outcome, polarity reversals, that were identified as the most stressful operational pattern, were reduced yearly by 50-80% based on day-ahead market flows using the algorithm. The simulations indicate that the developed algorithm reduces dielectric stresses significantly compared with the current operational style. This illustrates the potential of a dynamic cable operation as a method for increasing the bipolar HVDC connection reliability while maintaining the full transmission capacity on the electricity markets. Based on the results, Fingrid Oyj has started preparations for implementing the algorithm in Fenno-Skan 1 and 2 operation. Several recommendations are given for improving the developed algorithm

Korkeajännitteiset tasasähkörajasiirtoyhteydet (HVDC) ovat tärkeitä yhteen kytketyn ja volatiilisen sähkönsiirtojärjestelmän tasapainottamiseksi ja siirto-varmuuden varmistamiseksi. Yhteyksissä käytettävien öljypaperieristeisen massamerikaapelien (MIND) arvellaan kärsivän kasvavista sähköisistä rasituksista jatkuvasti vaihtelevampien tehosiirtojen vuoksi. Kaapeleiden luotettavuuden parantamiseksi on tyypillisesti asetettu käyttörajoituksia siirtoyhteydelle. Rajoitukset voivat kuitenkin estää HVDC yhteyttä tasapainottamasta sähkön-tuotantoa ja -kysyntää isolla markkina-alueella, mikä on tärkeää tulevaisuuden puhtaassa sähköjärjestelmässä. Tämän työn ensimmäinen tavoite on kehittää algoritmi bipolaarisen Fenno-Skan 1 ja 2 HVDC-yhteyden dynaamiseen ja optimaaliseen summatehon jakamiseen, jotta yhteyden MIND-merikaapelien rasitusta voidaan pienentää ilman ylimääräisiä käyttörajoituksia. Työn toisena tavoitteena on jatkokehittää Fingrid Oyj:n kehittämää rasituspistejärjestelmää. Tässä työssä kehitetty algoritmi hyödyntää päivitettyä rasituspistejärjestelmää testaamaan tehonjakovaihtoehtoja, joilla sähkömarkkinoilla määrätyn bipolaariyhteyden siirtotehon voi jakaa kaapelikohtaisiin Fenno-Skan 1 ja 2 te-hoihin. Päivitetty rasituspistejärjestelmä seuraa rasittavia ajotapoja DC-jännitteestä ja -virrasta sekä pisteyttää esiintyneet ajotavat arvioidun rasitustason mukaisesti. Järjestelmän avulla algoritmi luo tehonjakoprofiilin, joka minimoi rasituspistekertymän syötetylle summatehodatalle. Testausvaiheessa optimoituja tehojakoprofiileja luotiin usean vuoden siirtodatan jokaiselle kalenteripäivälle ja verrattiin vuosittaista rasituspistekertymää nykyisen staattisen ajoprofiilin tulosten kanssa. Tulosten perusteella polariteetinkäännöksiä, jotka tunnistettiin kaikista rasittavammaksi ajotavaksi, vähennettiin 50–80 % vuorokausimarkkinoilla työssä kehitetyn algoritmin avulla. Simulointitulokset viittaavat siihen, että kehi-tetty algoritmi merkittävästi vähentää kaapelien sähköistä rasitusta verrattuna nykyiseen ajotapaan. Tulokset myös havainnollistavat, että kaapeleiden dynaaminen ajotapa parantaa HVDC-linkin luotettavuutta. Tämän perusteella Fingrid Oyj on aloittanut valmistelut algoritmin käyttöönottamiseksi. Useita kehityskohteita suositeltiin algoritmin kehittämiseksi.
