Abstract
Location coordinates provide interesting context data for various purposes. In the early days location data was mainly connected to emergency services, but nowadays several social and commercial applications can benefit from users' position information. Smart phones have started to take advantage of their CPS support to provide diverse functionality and applications to the users regarding their coordinates, and also modern mobile platforms provide libraries that allow third party developers to take advantage of the devices' CPS capabilities to develop location based services (LBS). However, the idea of including location capabilities in mobile phones is not new. Telecom operators have always had the capability of locating terminals in their networks through the location of their cell towers, and in the past they made an unsuccessful attempt of offering simple services that made use of this capability. The simplicity and the lack of innovation in these primitive LBS were the main reason for this failure. Although, the recent decisions of several operators of releasing open platforms giving access to their network capabilities to third party developers are setting operators on a new perspective. This perspective looks promising also for the creation of new LBS using the operators' location capability, but this time under an open innovation schema. On the other hand, there are several technology, business, usability and privacy challenges to be solved before successful and widespread location based services (LBS) can be offered. This thesis studies how we can combine LBS with the location APIs that Telecom operators have recently released.Description
