Abstract
The thesis, BEWARE AND BE-AWARE OF WORDS AND IMAGES. Constructing the other texts around the photographic project Migrant Souls, grounds in conflicts with that project and my artistic practice in general. The conflicts are rooted in a crisis of meaning related to a search for social sense, purpose, and value. Migrant Souls deals with an entangled and complex social issue without the migratory ref-erent itself. The focus is on inner processes and journeys. The photographs that compose it are land-scapes, and the approach is through symbolic and connotative language. Therefore, the thesis is the necessary path to guide my unsettled relationship with texts and con-texts. For this, as a part of the completion of the series and in response to a need for texts in contemporary art, I write different sorts of texts around it. The search also is a way of enhancing the narrative, contextualising and positioning the series. The thesis consists of two related components: a photographic project that gives rise to a written part. Migrant Souls project is presented in its two display formats, the dummy book and the Master`s de-gree exhibition MoA 2023, at The Finnish Museum of Photography. The text is a subjective approach through my experience in the broad field of current photography. The first chapters of the written component are a review of the construction process of the series and its backdrop regarding contem-porary art, theory, and poetic thinking. The last chapter consists of textual experiments with seven style exercises around the series. In addition, the thesis includes the layout and documentation of the dummy book and the exhibition.Description
