Abstract
This Master’s thesis is divided in two parts, and it consists of a written contextualising part and a productive part, and the emphasis is on the latter one. The productive part, analyses and materialises the research made into a nine-look fashion collection, Taped on the Skin, that consists of both womenswear and menswear. The written part includes a study of sensuality, menswear and colour, researching the relation of these three. The research question “What forms does sensuality take in men’s fashion?” is approached through conceptual research method and through prototyping. The written part of this thesis researches sensuality with its connotations to sexuality, femininity, eroticism and materiality. It researches when, where and how the cultural dressing norms were bent and broken. The visual analysis concentrates on researching the 1990’s fashion and photography. The first appearance of the “new man” in the 1980’s and the 1990’s, impacted the way we see and understand men’s fashion today. The productive part, being the fashion collection, is created through the relation between research, visual analysis and design process. The ground idea for material design, that leads to experimental material manipulations, started from the effect and idea of having a wet garment taped close to the skin. The colour research is concentrated on red and blue and their history. These colours create a colour spectrum for the final line-up by using different shades red and blue colours. Taped on the Skin collection combines the traditional men’s and women’s fashion archetypes with materials, that are generally seen and used in women’s fashion. The hand-made printing and folding techniques are used to give the garments an actual close-to-the-skin -taping effect, but to also bring a clear visual effect and another layer of colour. All fabrics are dyed according to the selected shades. Finally, the fashion collection, the sensual outcome, is presented by garments and looks, and also through a photographed presentation. The conclusion part reflects and analyses the whole process with its challenges and accomplishments. The collection presents my vision of sensuality and answers to how sensuality challenges the normative understanding of men’s fashion. This thesis does not thus only define the new sensual man, but a new concept of sensuality in fashion design. The outcome is a nine-look fashion collection designed and made from fabrics that is not bound to any specific gender, and expresses an idea of genderless sensuality.Maisterin opinnäytetyö on kaksiosainen ja se koostuu kontekstuaalisesta kirjallisesta osuudesta, sekä produktiivisesta osuudesta, pääpainon ollessa jälkimmäisessä. Produktiivinen osuus, analysoi ja materialisoi tehdyn tutkimuksen yhdeksän asukokonaisuuden vaatemallistoksi, Taped on the Skin, joka koostuu sekä, naisten -että miesten asukokonaisuuksista. Kirjallinen osuus sisältää tutkimuksen sensuaalisuudesta, miesten muodista sekä väreistä, tutkien näiden kolmen suhdetta toisiinsa. Tutkimuskysymystä ”Minä muotoina sensuaalisuus näyttäytyy miesten muodissa?” lähestytään konseptuaalisen tutkimusmenetelmän sekä prototypoinnin kautta. Opinnäytteen kirjallinen osuus tutkii sensuaalisuutta sekä sen lisämerkityksiä seksuaalisuudessa, feminiinisyydessä, erotiikassa ja materiaalisuudessa. Se tutkii milloin, missä ja miten kulttuurisia pukeutumisnormeja on venytetty ja rikottu. Visuaalinen analyysi keskittyy tutkimaan 1990-luvun muotia ja valokuvausta. ”Uuden miehen” ensi esiintyminen 1980- ja 1990-luvuilla on vaikuttanut kykyymme nähdä ja käsittää miesten muotia nykypäivänä. Produktiivinen osuus, eli konseptuaalinen vaatemallisto, luodaan yhdistelemällä taustatutkimusta, visuaalista analyysia sekä mallistoprosessia. Materiaalisuunnittelu, joka johti kokeelliseen materiaalin muokkaukseen, sai lähtönsä vaikutelmasta ja ideasta, jolloin märkä vaate on teipattu ihoa vasten. Taustatutkimus väreistä keskittyy tutkimaan punaista ja sinistä ja näiden historiaa. Nämä värit luovat värispektrin lopulliseen mallistoon käyttämällä punaisen ja sinisen eri sävyjä. Taped on the Skin -mallisto yhdistää tyypillisiä miesten sekä naisten vaatteiden arkkityyppejä materiaaleihin, joita tavanomaisesti nähdään ja käytetään naisten muodissa. Käsintehtyä kankaanpaino- ja laskostustekniikkaa käytetään antamaan vaatteille lähelle ihoa tuleva teippaus efekti, mutta sillä tuodaan myös selkeä visuaalisen ilme, sekä uusi värisävy. Kaikki kankaat värjätään valittujen sävyjen mukaan. Lopuksi vaatemallisto, eli sensuaalinen lopputulos, esitellään vaatekappaleittain sekä asukokonaisuuksina, mutta myös valokuva presentaationa. Johtopäätöksissä reflektoidaan ja analysoidaan koko prosessia, sen tuomine haasteineen ja onnistumisineen. Mallisto esittää oman näkemykseni sensuaalisuudesta sekä vastaa kysymyksiin, kuinka sensuaalisuus haastaa normatiivisen käsityksen miesten muodista. Tämä opinnäytetyö ei pelkästään määrittele uutta sensuaalista miestä, vaan luo uuden konseptin sensuaalisuudesta muotisuunnittelussa. Lopputulos on yhdeksän asukokonaisuuden vaatemallisto, joka on suunniteltu ja tehty kankaista, jotka eivät ole sidoksissa mihinkään tiettyyn sukupuoleen, ilmentäen näin sukupuoletonta sensuaalisuutta.Description
