Abstract

User participation and information system success are topics that are highly studied in the field of information system development. Despite of that, there is not an agreed conclusion on how user participation affects to information system success. The study explores the relationships between user participation and information system development to understand different connections between them and the concept of success and failure in information system development. Many time the connections, and outcomes of connections, are not clear and in highly complex projects. The research highlights the challenges in defining information system development success, which can be multidimensional, where projects fail in some aspects, but have success in others. Managerial implication of the study suggests that user participation can be beneficial, but its implemen-tation should be carefully calibrated to match project’s complexity, stakeholder needs and user requirements.

Käyttäjien osallistuminen tietojärjestelmäprojektien kehitystyöhön ja tietojärjestelmäprojektien lopputuloksen onnistumiseen ovat aiheita, joita on tutkittu paljon tietojärjestelmätieteiden alalla. Siitä huolimatta alalla ei ole yksimielisyyttä käyttäjien osallistumisen hyödyistä projektien lopputulokseen. Tässä tutkimuksessa tutkitaan käyttäjien osallistumisen ja tietojärjestelmäkehitystyön suhteita, jotta voidaan ymmärtää paremmin eri yhteyksiä varsinkin osallistumisen ja projektien onnistumisen ja epäonnistumisen välillä. Usein nämä yhteydet eivät ole selkeitä varsinkaan hankkeissa, jotka ovat leimallisesti monimutkaisia. Tutkimus korostaa tietojärjestelmäprojektien onnistumisen määrittelyn haasteita, sillä tulokset voivat olla moniulotteisia, esimerkiksi tilanteissa, joissa projekti on epäonnistunut tietyissä asioissa, mutta onnistunut toisissa. Tutkimuksen löydökset viittaavat siihen, että käyttäjien osallistuminen voi olla projektin kannalta hyödyllistä, mutta käytännön toteutuksessa tulee ottaa huomioon projektin monimutkaisuus, jotta käyttäjien osallistumisen taso on riittävä huomioiden monimutkaisuuden, erilaiset sidosryhmätarpeet sekä käyttäjien vaatimukset projektille.
