Abstract
The construction industry, characterized by its substantial environmental footprint and significant economic impact, stands at the forefront of sustainability challenges. This thesis explores the adoption of circular economy (CE) practices within the construction sector, specifically examining the resources and capabilities required to implement these practices effectively. Employing a relational resource-based view, the research investigates how construction firms can leverage both internal and external resources and capabilities to adopt CE practices. Through a qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews with industry professionals in Finland, this research identifies key tangible, intangible, and relational resources that facilitate the adoption of CE practices. Findings high-light the critical role of technological tools, knowledge management, and collaborative networks, among others, in enhancing resource efficiency and fostering innovation in circular practices. The study also addresses barriers and drivers to CE adoption, such as regulatory challenges and the conventional mindset prevalent within the industry. This thesis contributes to the theoretical discourse by providing a more nuanced understanding of the role of various types of resources in facilitating CE adoption, utilizing a unique theoretical framework that integrates the resource-based view and the relational view. It also offers practical insights for business leaders, policymakers, and other key stakeholders on fostering a supportive environment for circular transformations. Ultimately, this research aims to pave the way for more effective implementation of CE practices in the construction industry, driving progress toward a more sustainable future.Description
