Abstract

Lopputyökseni äänisuunnittelin Elina Oikarin elokuvan Myrsky. Elokuva on 40 minuutin mykkäadaptaatio Shakespearen samannimisestä näytelmästä. Mykkäelokuvan äänisuunnittelu on paradoksi sinänsä. Samalla tutkin elokuvataiteen kokeellisempia muotoja futuristien manifestista expanded cinema-nimiseen alalajiin.

As my diploma work I worked as the sound designer of film the Tempest, by Elina Oikari. The film is a forty minute silent film adaptation of Shakespeare’s play of the same name. Sound designing a silent film is a paradox in itself. Finding the right aesthetic is of key importance. I aimed for the sound design to be performed live as. The root of this experimentation was to challenge the boundaries of cinematic storytelling and my own abilities as a sound designer. This thesis can be divided in to two parts. In the first part I'll go through the traditions on live orchestration of silent films, to which The Tempest is aesthetically based on. Both film sound and music have long traditions, which carry on to this day. I shall go through its history in a small extent. I will also go through cinemas more experimental forms from the Futurist Manifesto to a sub-genre of cinema called expanded cinema. One central aspect of storytelling in expanded cinema is the time of screening, in an effort to make the viewer apart of the process of creation. I will also give examples of modern live cinema theory and practices. My goal was to create a layer of storytelling for The Tempest through live sound design. One layer was the projected image and the second the live orchestration of music. A traditional sound edit was made for distribution purposes, but in my opinion it differs from the the live version sound design. In the same time the final sound edit of the film draws it's inspiration from the live sound design. In the second part I will open the process and challenges of sound designing The Tempest, which led me to investigate the history and theory of live cinema. The challenges were on the first hand, to plan a set of sounds that could be done live. The second was to create a set of sounds that would enhance the style of The Tempest. I aim to compare the differences and similarities of feature film, expanded cinema and silent film. As a whole I hope this text gives a sense of the forms and possibilities of experimental film.
