Abstract

Objectives The main objectives of this study were to examine the factors that make an entrepreneurial ecosystem successful and explore the theory of the start-up NGO in catering to those factors. Additionally, this study aims to gather the perceptions of entrepreneurship by students and identify how a positive shift in these perceptions can be facilitated. Summary This study conducted a literature review in order to scope out the main theories that make a successful entrepreneur and an entrepreneurial ecosystem. A theory of the main stakeholder of the study, the start-up NGO was formed as well. A conceptual framework was formed based on these theories which highlights the key gaps that should be filled by the start-up NGO in order to promote success in entrepreneurship across various actors from students to existing founders. As the study was exploratory in nature, qualitative data was gathered via 3 interviews who provided both an insider’s and outsider’s perspective of the case subject, Slush. The purpose of these interviews was to identify what Slush had already done that had positively impacted the Finnish ecosystem and where it is headed to ensure continuous prosperity. Conclusions In conclusion, this study helped define a successful entrepreneurial landscape with certain key qualities and identified areas within the existing ecosystem that are currently reducing the attractiveness of entrepreneurship as a career path. Some of these include the structure of the Finnish tertiary education system, the lack of support in the ideation and financing phases. It was instead found that a more supportive environment that embraces learning and independent thinking stimulates the growth of new innovative products and increases the likelihood of success.
