Abstract
Tämä pro gradu -tutkielma hahmottaa paikan ja tilan käsitettä sekä tilan ja taiteen vuorovaikutusta Galleria Forum Boxin kautta. Entiseen sillanalusvarastoon toteutettu galleria Forum Box on vuodesta 1999 lähtien ollut suomalaisen kuvataiteen keskiössä. Tila pursuaa moninaisia kerrostumia ja sosiaalisia yhtymäkohtia niin pienessä kuin isossa mittakaavassa. Tilan galleriakäyttöön suunnitellut arkkitehti Juhani Pallasmaa on tutkinut tilan määritelmää sekä arkkitehtuurin ja taiteen olemusta vuosikymmeniä. Lähtökohta tutkielmalle on ymmärtää mitä tila on: abstrakti käsite, jolle olemme antaneet sanan, sanalle raamit ja raameille määritelmän, joka luo tietyn mielikuvan. Kuinka määrittelemme ja analysoimme tilaa? Miten käsitteet tila ja paikka eroavat toisistaan keskustellessamme: milloin on kyse tilasta, milloin paikasta? Mitä ominaisuuksia paikan käsitteeseen liittyy? Mitä paikka on? Entä mitä ajan aspekti tuo keskusteluun lisää?
Arkkitehtuuria kutsuttiin aikanaan rakennustaiteeksi. Nimekkäät arkkitehdit kautta aikojen ovat saaneet inspiraatiota taiteesta ja taiteilijoista. Voiko taiteen avulla ymmärtää paremmin tilaa, paikkaa ja aikaa? Miten taide ja tarkemmin tilallisuuden kanssa työskentelevät taitelijat määrittelevät tilan, johon he teoksiaan tekevät? Arkkitehdin suunnittelema tila sykkii olemassaoloaan taiteilijan teokseen kuin tietämättään. Taideteos ottaa viitteitä ympäristöstään, punoen omaa verkkoaan tarinalleen, johon astumme. Mitkä ovat erinäiset tasot, jotka keskustelevat keskenään muodostaen uusia ulottuvuuksia koettaviksi?
Tutkielman aineisto on kerätty kirjallisen tuotannon lisäksi haastattelemalla arkkitehti Juhani Pallasmaata sekä kolmea suomalaista kuvataiteilijaa, jotka ovat tehneet tilallisia teoksia Galleria Forum Boxiin. Tilataiteen kentällä työskentelevät taitelijat pureutuvat intensiteetillä näyttelytilaan, johon teokset valmistuvat. Paikkasidonnainen teos on vain hetkellisen ajan koettavissa sen suunnitellussa olemuksessa. Taiteilijat käyttävät ja tuovat eri tavoin tilan raameja, kerrostumia sekä taiteen historiaa osaksi teoksiaan, avaten uusia ulottuvuuksia tilan määritelmään ja taiteen vuorovaikutukseen tilassa.
Tutkielmassa on vaikutteita humanistisen maantieteen paikkatutkimusperinteestä brittiläisen maantieteilijä Doreen Masseyn (1944–2016) tilateorioiden kautta. Massey on haastanut perinteisen ajattelun tilan staattisuudesta ja ajan liikkuvuudesta sekä avartanut ymmärrystä sosiaalisten suhteiden ja paikan eriajallisten kerrostumien vaikutuksesta tilan ymmärtämiseen ja ajan ominaisuuteen.
Osana lopullista tutkielmaa on taiteellinen produktio-osio, joka on toteutettu Realm of Senses -kurssin yhteydessä Espoossa sijaitsevaan Dipoliin. All that remained (2022) toimi omakohtaisena ajattelun ja tekemisen työvälineenä sekä kimmokkeena eri kerrostumiin, jotka ovat alati läsnä jokaisessa tilassa, paikassa ja ajassa.
This master's thesis explores the concepts of place and space as well as the interaction between space and art through the Galleria Forum Box. Established in a former underpass warehouse, Forum Box has been at the heart of Finnish visual art scene since 1999. The gallery space is rich with diverse layers and social intersections on both small and large scales. Architect Juhani Pallasmaa, who designed the space for gallery use, has studied the definition of space and the essence of architecture and art for decades.
The starting point for the thesis is to understand what space is: an abstract concept to which we have assigned a word, framed that word, and given the frame a definition that creates a specific mental image. How do we define and analyze space? How do the concepts of space and place differ in discussion: when do we talk about space, and when about place? What characteristics are inherent to the concept of place? What is place? And what does the temporal aspect add to the conversation?
Architecture was once called the art of building. Renowned architects throughout history have drawn inspiration from art and artists. Can art help us better understand space, place, and time? How do artists, particularly those working with spatiality, define the spaces in which they create their works? A space designed by an architect pulsates its existence into an artist's work almost unknowingly. A work of art takes cues from its surroundings, weaving its own narrative web into which we step. What are the various levels that interact to form new dimensions of experience?
The research material for the thesis includes literary sources as well as interviews with architect Juhani Pallasmaa and three Finnish visual artists who have created spatial works for Galleria Forum Box. Artists working in the field of spatial art engage intensively with the exhibition space where their works are created. A site-specific piece can be experienced in its intended form only for a fleeting moment. Artists use and incorporate the frames, layers, and history of the space in different ways as part of their works, opening new dimensions to the definition of space and the interaction of art within it.
The thesis draws influences from the humanistic geography tradition of place studies, particularly through the spatial theories of British geographer Doreen Massey (1944–2016). Massey challenged the traditional thinking of space as static and time as dynamic, broadening the understanding of how social relations and the temporal layers of place influence the perception of space and the nature of time.
As part of the final thesis, an artistic production section was carried out in connection with the Realm of Senses course at Dipoli in Espoo. All That Remained (2022) served as a personal tool for thinking and creating, as well as a stimulus for exploring the various layers that are ever-present in every space, place, and time.
