Abstract
“Mamankara” proposes an interdisciplinary approach to seeking bio-based solutions for enhancing interior acoustics in Textile Design. The texture and form of this modular collection draw inspiration from the anatomy of saris and the magnitude of their sentimental worth. The study explores the aesthetic and functional effects of Microfibrillar Cellulose (MFC), manually applied to twenty double-layered woven textiles. The initial acoustic testing phase assessed the minimum required fiber thickness, eliminating swatches woven with finer yarns from consideration. The following test involved ten textile swatches woven with thicker yarns and MFC coatings, meeting the desired sound absorption criteria. The textile coatings gradually evolved into wood-based foam coatings, previously known for their superior acoustic properties. The alternative methodology for foam production involves manual blending of sawdust, spruce fibers, MFC, Microcrystalline Cellulose, and dish washing liquid. The resulting collection of four acoustic textiles exhibited a 10% increase in sound absorption when paired with the glass wool foam. This design philosophy intends to impart a sense of warmth and comfort throughout the collection. The present research merges artistic creativity with experimental acoustic interventions, contributing to the evolving landscape of textile design by simplifying future solutions while strengthening the influence of familial and spatial inspirations.
