Abstract

Opinnäytteessäni tutkin taiteellisen tutkimuksen menetelmin kirjontaa käyttäen tyhjyyttä ja low-tech -lähestymistapaa taiteellisena inspiraationani. Poeettisten ominaisuuksiensa innoittamana, tutkin kirjonnan luovaa potentiaalia vaatesuunnittelukontekstissa. Opinnäyte on designprosessin kuvaus naistenvaatemalliston suunnittelusta. Opinnäytemallisto on toteutettu yhteistyössä vaatesuunnittelun MA opiskelija Cecilia Hammarénin kanssa, joka omassa opinnäytteessään tutkii kollaasin mahdollisuuksia vaatesuunnittelussa. Opinnäyte on oman työni kautta kirjonnan, slow- ja kriittisen designin, sekä haute couturen välisiä kytköksiä pohtiva teos.

Using a low-tech approach and blank iconography as my artistic inspiration, this thesis investigates embroidery within the context of fashion design. Fascinated by the poetic qualities of this textile technique, the research task has been to explore the creative potential of embroidery. The clothing collection created has been designed in creative collaboration with fellow MA fashion design student Cecilia Hammarén, who in her thesis examines the possibilities of collage in fashion design. By design collaboration a new dimension is added to the creative process with hopes of fostering openness in design practice. Due to the practice-led research approach, the important topics discussed in this thesis have arisen from practicing my embroidering and design work. Embroidery is discussed as means of critical design, providing inspiration for this project. Slow design has been explored with a personal agenda of finding a meaningful way to practice design. It is discussed in relation to haute couture, within which embroidery holds its strong place. The thesis is a description of a design process, discussing embroidery, slow design, critical design, haute couture and how they are interlinked.
