Abstract

This thesis explores the current use and potential impact of machine learning (ML) methods and big data within the accounting section of a Finnish software company. The study begins with a literature review examining how ML and big data have evolved in the field of management accounting, with a particular focus on their implications for the role of management accountants, commonly referred to as controllers. The research also investigates how these technologies may influence or transform the processes traditionally performed by controllers. To compare theory with practice, a case study was conducted in a Finnish software company using a semi-structured interview approach. The objective is to assess the current state of technological adoption in management accounting and based on these findings, provide insight into the likely direction of future development
