Abstract
Tämä opinnäytetyö kartoittaa, mikä merkitys mielipaikoilla on opiskeluympäristössä, minkälaiset esteettiset ominaisuudet houkuttelevat opiskelijoita ja henkilökuntaa pohjoismaisessa yliopistossa 2020-luvulla sekä miten esteettiset ominaisuudet vaikuttavat elvyttävyyden kokemukseen yksilön kohdalla. Tutkielman kohderyhmänä on Aalto-yliopiston opiskelijat ja henkilökunta (N=173), joiden kokemuksia ja mieltymyksiä Taiteen ja suunnittelun korkeakoulun (Aalto ARTS) päärakennuksesta, Väreestä tarkastellaan. Tutkielman lähestymistapana hyödynnetään ympäristöpsykologian näkökulmaa, jossa aihetta tarkastellaan sekä laadullisen että määrällisen tutkimuksen keinoin ymmärtäen ihmistä omakohtaisten kokemusten ja kokemusperäisen tiedon kautta. Kerättyä aineistoa analysoidaan ja tulkitaan suhteessa teoriaan, jossa oleellisena osana ovat esteettinen kokemus, opiskeluympäristöt, yksilön hyvinvointi sekä mielipaikat. Tutkielman tavoitteena on edistää ymmärrystä viihtyisän ympäristön ja esteettisen kokemuksen merkityksestä opiskeluympäristössä. Aineiston keruuna käytettiin sekä Maptionnaire karttatieto-ohjelman avulla luotua paikkatietokyselyä, jossa kerättiin osallistavin keinoin kokemusperäistä tietoa (PPGIS) Väre-rakennukseen liittyen sekä vapaata havainnointia, jonka avulla kerätty tieto on tehty paikassa tietoisesti tarkkailemalla. Tutkielma osoittaa, että esteettisesti houkuttelevat ja elpymisen kokemuksia tuottavat paikat Väreessä sijaitsevat epämuodollisen oppimisen tiloissa. Virallisia oppimisen tiloja ei koettu houkutteleviksi. Toinen keskeinen löytö on Väreen mielipaikkoihin liittyvien elpymiskokemusten väliset erot eri paikoissa. Aineiston perusteella käy ilmi, että Väre-rakennuksen kerrokset ovat jakautuneet eri tunnelmaan, äänimaailmaan ja siten ohjaavat erilaisia elpymiskokemuksia. Kolmantena löytönä havaittiin, että esteettiset ominaisuudet houkuttelevat osana arjen ympäristöä. Väreessä aineiston perusteella tärkeimpänä esteettisenä ominaisuutena pidettiin: 1) tunnelmaa, valoa ja tilallisuutta, 2) toiminnallisia tekijöitä ja 3) arkkitehtuuria, jotka houkuttelevat yksilön valitseman toiminnan yhteydessä ja auttavat mahdollistamaan elpymisen kokemuksen. Paikkatietokyselytutkimuksen avulla kartoittaminen mahdollisti onnistuvan tavan kerätä kokemusperäistä tietoa yhdistettynä tiettyyn paikkaan. Tutkielmasta ilmeni avoimien yhteisten tilojen ja esteettisten ominaisuuksien positiivinen merkitys osana opiskeluympäristöä. Esteettiset ominaisuudet mahdollistavat esteettisen kokemuksen, joka on väylä elpymiseen ja siten kokonaisvaltaisen hyvinvoinnin vahvistamiseen.This paper maps the importance of favourite places in the University environment, what kind of aesthetic qualities attract students and staff at a Nordic university in the 2020s, and how aesthetic qualities affect the experience of restoration for an individual. The target group of the thesis is Aalto University students and staff (N=173), whose experiences and preferences in the main building of the School of Art and Design (Aalto ARTS), Väre, are examined. The approach of the thesis utilises the perspective of environmental psychology, where the topic is examined with both qualitative and quantitative research methods, understanding people through personal experiences and experiential knowledge. The collected material is analysed and interpreted in relation to the theory, where aesthetic experience, study environments, individual well-being and favourite places are an essential part. The aim of the thesis is to promote understanding of the attractive environment and aesthetic experience in the University environment. The data was collected using a participatory map-based survey tool Maptionnaire, where students and staff experiences (PPGIS) were related to the Väre building. Also free observation data was collected by consciously observing the place. The study shows that the aesthetically attractive and restorative places in Väre are located in informal learning spaces. Formal learning spaces weren’t perceived as attractive. Another central finding of the thesis is the differences between the restorative experiences related to Väre's favourite places in different locations. Based on the data, it appears that the floors of the Väre building are divided into different atmospheres, soundscapes and thus enable different restorative experiences. The third finding is that aesthetic qualities are attractive as part of the everyday environment. In Väre, based on the thesis material, the most important aesthetic qualities were considered to be: 1) atmosphere, light and spaciousness, 2) functional factors and 3) architecture, which attract the individual in connection with the chosen activity and help enable the restorative experience. Mapping with a spatial information survey enabled a successful way to collect experiential information combined with the exact place. The study revealed the positive importance of open common spaces and aesthetic qualities as part of the University environment. Aesthetic qualities enable an aesthetic experience, which is a way to create a restorative experience and thus strengthen overall well-being.Description
