Abstract

In this thesis, the basics of multi-hop and cooperative communication are introduced. Then work focuses on the relaying protocols and relay selection. The performance of different multi-hop and cooperative communication scenarios are analyzed and simulated through outage probability and symbol error rate. The advantages and drawbacks of each communication scheme are obtained by analyzing the SER diagrams and outage probabilities. In the relaying protocol sections, the fixed relaying protocols and adaptive relaying protocols are discussed. The fixed amplify-and-forward relaying protocol and decode-and-forward relaying protocol are the most common techniques. By comparing the outage probability, spectral efficiency and SNR, we can find out the performance of these two fixed relaying protocols and the differences between them. For the adaptive relaying protocol part, the selective DF relaying protocol and incremental AF relaying protocol are analyzed. In the relay selection part, two questions are answered. In the single-relay relay-selection scenario, the question "when to cooperate" is considered. As well as in the multi-relay relay-selection scenario, the question "cooperate with whom" is answered.
