Abstract
Many growing cities are facing the challenge of providing affordable housing for their residents. Simultaneously, these highly developed cities boast a plethora of vacant and underutilized lands that can be further explored. Located in the highly developed city center, some of the infill sites are comparatively smaller in scale and scattered throughout the city. The potential of these small-scale sites can offer a feasible solution for affordable housing.
The focus of this thesis is to develop a sustainable and cost-effective solution for affordable housing on small-scale urban infill sites. The proposed solution involves a prefabricated timber construction system. Utilizing this system, two buildings were designed on different obsolete sites, resulting in greater efficiency. The provision of this construction system does not entail a mere duplication of a standardized typology. Rather, it offers a reliable, sustainable, and cost-effective tool for architects to unleash their creativity, design accordingly, and contribute to diverse forms of living.
Results address the small-scale infill affordable housing is feasible and habitable. The introduction of a prefabricated timber construction system not only makes the infill affordable housing cost-saving, eco-friendly, and aesthetically valuable but also contributes towards achieving the goal of sustainability that encompasses economic, social, and environmental dimensions.
