Estimating the energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and cost-competitiveness of electric vehicles in urban freight transport

Abstract

Urban freight transport has a critical role in our economic system, but at the same time it causes several environmental issues in cities, such as greenhouse gas emissions, local emissions, and noise pollution. This research assessed the costs and greenhouse gas emissions of electric freight vehicles (EFVs) in urban freight operations in comparison to diesel vehicles. A total of 40 real-world urban delivery journeys were analysed. The energy consumption was modelled with a microscopic energy consumption model based on second-by-second GPS trajectory data. The necessary battery capacities were determined for three different recharging scenarios to evaluate the impact of recharging strategy on the total cost of ownership of an electric freight vehicle. The operation-phase greenhouse gas emissions of the electric vehicle were calculated based on the modelled energy consumption and the carbon intensity of the electricity mix in Finland. The results of the total cost of ownership analysis show that electric freight vehicles still perform economically worse than their diesel counterparts. Recharging the vehicle during operation enables reduction of the battery capacity and improves the cost-competitiveness of electric vehicles if the vehicle is recharged during unloading, loading and breaks. Whereas an additional recharging stop reduces the necessary battery capacity but leads to increased costs compared to solely overnight charging due to the time loss. The carbon dioxide reduction potential of electric freight vehicles is estimated to be 84-88% when charged with the average electricity mix of Finland. The sensitivity analysis showed that the electricity mix has a significant impact on the emissions of electric vehicles. The emission reduction potential is 58-67% when charged with the average electricity mix of the EU. This study offers insight on the usage of electric vehicles in urban delivery transport and can be used as a background information for policy discussions on measures for reducing emissions of urban freight transport. Further research is needed on minimising the environmental impact of electric mobility and to develop understanding on charging infrastructure development for electric freight vehicles.

Kaupunkien tavaraliikenteellä on kriittinen rooli taloudellisessa järjestelmässämme, mutta samalla se aiheuttaa kasvihuonekaasupäästöjä, paikallisia päästöjä sekä meluhaittoja. Tässä tutkimuksessa verrattiin sähkökuorma-autojen kustannuksia ja kasvihuonekaasupäästöjä dieselajoneuvoihin kaupunkien tavaraliikenteessä. Työssä analysoitiin yhteensä 40 todellista jakeluliikenteen yhden päivän aikana suorittamaa matkaa. Ajoneuvojen energiankulutus mallinnettiin mikroskooppisella energiankulutusmallilla. Sähköajoneuvon tarvittava akkukapasiteetti määritettiin kolmelle eri latausskenaariolle, jotta latausstrategian vaikutusta elinkaaren kustannuksiin pystyttiin arvioimaan. Sähköajoneuvon käyttövaiheen kasvihuonekaasupäästöt laskettiin energiankulutuksen ja Suomen sähköntuotannon hiilidioksisipäästökertoimen perusteella. Elinkaarikustannusanalyysin tulokset osoittavat, että sähkökuorma-autot ovat edelleen kalliimpia kuin dieselajoneuvot. Ajoneuvon lataaminen päivän aikana mahdollistaa akun kapasiteetin pienentämisen ja parantaa sähköajoneuvojen kustannuskilpailukykyä, mikäli lataus suoritetaan lastaamisen, purun ja taukojen aikana. Ylimääräisen lataustauon pitäminen mahdollistaa akkukapasiteetin pienentämisen, mutta johtaa kustannusten kasvuun verrattuna pelkästään yön yli lataukseen johtuen aikakustannuksesta. Sähköajoneuvojen arvioidaan vähentävän käytönaikaisia hiilidioksidipäästöjä 84-88% käytettäessä Suomen sähköntuotannon keskimääräistä päästökerrointa. Herkkyystarkastelu osoitti, että sähköntuotannon päästökertoimella on merkittävä vaikutus sähköajoneuvojen päästöihin. Päästövähennyspotentiaali laski 58-67 prosenttiin käytettäessä EU:n sähköntuotannon keskimääräistä päästökerrointa. Tutkimuksen tuloksia voidaan hyödyntää taustatietona kaupunkien tavaraliikenteen päästöjen vähentämistoimenpiteitä suunniteltaessa. Lisätutkimusta kuitenkin tarvitaan sähköajoneuvojen ympäristövaikutusten minimoimiseksi sekä optimaalisen latausinfrastruktuurin kehittämiseksi.
