Abstract
Finland has abundant tourism resources all over the country. However, compared to its neighboring Norway, the Finnish government lacks enough attention to designing and constructing tourism service buildings. Most of the Finnish tourist buildings are old and humble huts with simple functions. In Finland, a good representative of regionalism, how to design tourism service buildings that reflect indigenous cultural and natural context is an interesting topic. Architectural identity is an intangible concept that is easy to perceive but difficult to describe. Generally, if several buildings share a similar identity, it’s simpler to depict. Another crucial topic of this thesis is attempting to describe and define an architectural identity in small-scale tourism buildings. The final design is based on the logic summarized in the research process. The site of the design is in Särkitunturi, which has a typical landscape of Lapland. This thesis is composed of four major parts: the project’s background, the research of architectural identity and indigenous features, the specific design, and the conclusion. The outcomes include a method that can define the architectural identity of small-scale tourism service buildings and five buildings design, which is guided by the summarised method.Description
