Abstract
Astrophysical jets occurring in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are observed throughout the entire electromagnetic spectrum from radio to gamma-rays and are distinguished by a characteristic non-thermal variable emission continuum. The synchrotron radiation, typically predominant at radio--ultra-violet frequencies, is the primary observational signature of jets. One of the main methods for constraining the physical conditions prevailing in jets is based on modelling the temporal and spectral properties of their emission, particularly in the radio-synchrotron domain during variability episodes.
This thesis presents a numerical framework for time-dependent modelling of synchrotron emission from astrophysical jets (focusing on the radio domain). A computer code based upon this model is developed as a part of the thesis. The adopted model takes a low-order kinetic approach by utilizing a standard kinetic diffusion-loss scheme to treat the evolution of particles (under, e.g., cooling and injection), and the resulting synchrotron spectra are calculated by solving a parallel radiative transfer through the medium (adopting a fast-light approximation and focusing on the homogeneous scenario). In addition, the basic scheme allows arbitrary prescription of particle energy distributions, injection functions, and laws governing the global parameters of the emission region.
To test the code, the generic model is limited to the well-studied homogeneous (and leptonic) blob-in-jet scenario. Modelling results from several iterations of this scenario are tested against the predictions in the literature, for which a qualitative agreement is confirmed. To demonstrate the developed modelling tool in practice, the model is applied to FSRQs 3C~273 and 4C~29.45 to simulate the variability events that occurred between 2010 and 2012; the models are constrained using the time-resolved radio--infra-red data from Planck multi-wavelength campaign. A two-components modelling is performed for 4C~29.45, and for object 3C~273, preliminary simulations find general agreement with observations for the decaying stage of the flaring event.
Kaksikomponentti-mallinnus suoritetaan kohteelle 4C~29.45. Objektin 3C~273 osalta alustavat simulaatiotulokset osoittavat kvalitatiivista vastavuutta vaihtelutapahtuman vaimenemisvaiheen havaintojen kanssa.
