Abstract

This thesis presents novel research into the power and energy consumption of ultra-low temperature refrigerators, specifically those based on dilution refrigerators and pulse tube coolers. The research was carried out on products provided by a cryogenics company and measurements were taken using ABB network analysers. Three different product families with distinct characteristics were selected for testing to understand their behaviour. Data compilation was performed using MS Excel and visualized with Python. The power consumption of the refrigerator system's various components was explored, as well as the overall energy consumption of the system. It was discovered that the largest refrigerator system would consume over 200 MWh of electricity per year, while the smallest product would consume around 70 MWh. When evaluating the yearly electricity cost of operating these refrigerator systems, it was found that the cost would range from €18k to €58k in the European Union and from $12k to $39k in the United States, depend
