Kesytön mieli: Tutkielma pakko-oireisen häiriön ja taiteen suhteesta

Abstract

Tämä maisteritutkielma perustuu taiteelliseen tutkimukseen. Sen tavoitteena oli tekijän tarve ymmärtää pakko-oireista häiriötä, taiteellista praktiikkaansa ja näiden keskinäistä suhdetta sekä jakaa tietoa pakko-oireisesta häiriöstä. Tutkielman keskeisin tutkimuskysymys on: Millainen suhde tekijän pakko-oireisella häiriöllä ja hänen taiteellisella praktiikallansa on?

Tutkielman tutkimusmenetelminä toimivat autoetnografia ja kaunokirjallisen tekstin kirjoittaminen. Tutkielman taiteellisena menetelmänä toimi akvarellimaalaus. Tekijän taiteellisesta toiminnasta syntyneet havainnot muuntuivat hänen tutkimusprosessissaan kahden kuvitteellisen hahmon dialogiksi. Tutkielman aineisto koostui tekijän taiteellisesta työskentelystä syntyneistä maalauksista ja muistiinpanoista sekä kirjallisesta lähdeaineistosta.

Tämä tutkielma rakentuu kolmesta pääluvusta. Ensimmäisessä pääluvussa esitellään tutkielman aihe, lähtökohdat ja tutkimusmenetelmät. Ensimmäisen pääluvun alaluvussa avataan lyhyesti nykylääketieteen ja psykiatrian käsityksiä pakko-oireisen käyttäytymisen/häiriön syistä, ilmenemisestä ja hoidosta. Tutkielman toinen pääluku sisältää fiktiivisiä dialogeja. Niissä tekijä pureutuu tutkimaan pakko-oireista häiriötä henkilökohtaisemmalla tasolla, havainnoi taiteellista praktiikkaansa ja tarkastelee nykytaiteilija Yayoi Kusamaa, hänen taidettaan ja hänestä mediassa kirjoitettuja tekstejä. Kolmannessa pääluvussa tekijä kirjoittaa taiteen suhteesta kärsimykseen ja nautintoon, avaa kirjoittamisen näkökulmaansa, pohtii tutkielmaa koskeneita ennakko-oletuksiansa ja kertoo tutkielmansa johtopäätöksistä.

This master's thesis is based on artistic research. The aim of this thesis was the author's need to understand obsessive-compulsive disorder, her artistic practice and their mutual relationship, and to share information about obsessive-compulsive disorder. The main research question of the thesis is: What is the relationship between the author's obsessive-compulsive disorder and her artistic practice?

The research methods of the thesis were autoethnography and writing fictional literary text. The artistic method of the thesis was watercolor painting. The observations arising from the author's artistic activities were transformed into a dialogue between two fictional characters during her research process. The material of the thesis consisted of paintings and notes arising from the author's artistic work, as well as written source material.

This thesis is structured into three main chapters. The first chapter introduces the topic, starting points and research methods of the thesis. The subchapter of the first chapter briefly opens the concepts of modern medicine and psychiatry on the causes, manifestation and treatment of obsessive-compulsive behavior/disorder. The second chapter of the thesis contains fictional dialogues. In them, the author delves into studying obsessive-compulsive disorder on a more personal level, observes her artistic practice and examines the contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama, her art and texts written about her in the media. In the third chapter, the author writes about the relationship between art and suffering and pleasure, opens her perspective on writing, reflects on her preconceptions regarding the thesis, and makes conclusions of her thesis.
