Top quark reconstruction in the analysis of charged Higgs bosons

Abstract

While the Standard Model of particle physics contains one electrically neutral Higgs boson, many extended theories involve electrically charged Higgs bosons (H+). A search procedure for a H+ with a fully hadronic final state, where the H+ decays as H+ to tau nu, and the tau lepton decays to hadrons and a neutrino, is presented. Methods for measuring the main backgrounds from data, and event selection for separating the signal events from the background are described. Methods for top quark reconstruction and the prospects for utilizing it to increase the sensitivity of the analysis are studied. Three different algorithms for reconstructing the top quark are presented. The reconstruction algorithms are studied with simulated events. A preliminary analysis is performed using 20 fb-1 of data from pp-collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV, recorded by the CMS detector at CERN LHC in 2012. Different combinations of top reconstruction algorithms and event selection criteria are studied. The expected upper limits for B(t -> H+ b)xB(H+ -> tau nu) with the H+ mass within 80-160 GeV, and sigma(H+)xB(H+ -> tau nu) with the H+ mass within 180-600 GeV, are derived using the different algorithms. The top reconstruction is found to significantly increase the sensitivity of the analysis only when delta phi selections designed to suppress the QCD multijet background are not applied. Since applying the delta phi selections leads to greater increase in the sensitivity, the addition of top reconstruction and selection steps into the event selection is not recommended.

Hiukkasfysiikan standardimalli sisältää yhden sähköisesti neutraalin Higgsin bosonin, mutta monet laajennetut teoriat sisältävät myös sähkövarauksellisia Higgsin bosoneja (H+). Tässä diplomityössä esitellään menetelmä sellaisten varattujen Higgsin bosonien etsimiseksi, jotka hajoavat ns. täysin hadroniseen lopputilaan: H+ hajoaa tau-leptoniksi ja neutriinoksi. Tau-leptoni puolestaan hajoaa edelleen hadroneiksi ja neutriinoksi. Työssä kuvaillaan menetelmät mittauksen taustan määrittämiseksi datasta, sekä törmäystapahtumien valinnan vaiheet, joilla signaali pyritään erottamaan taustasta. Työ käsittelee menetelmiä, joilla tapahtumassa mukana ollut top-kvarkki voidaan rekonstruoida sekä mahdollisuuksia käyttää tämän rekonstruoidun hiukkasen ominaisuuksia analyysin herkkyyden parantamiseen. Kolme erilaista algoritmia top-kvarkin rekontruoimiseksi esitellään, ja algoritmeja testataan simuloiduilla hiukkastörmäyksillä. Alustava analyysi suoritetaan käyttäen 20 fb-1 mittausdataa protoni-protonitörmäyksistä, joiden massakeskipiste-energia on sqrt(s) = 8 TeV ja jotka CMS-ilmaisin tallensi CERNin LHC-kiihdyttimellä vuonna 2012. Erilaisia rekonstruktioalgoritmien ja valintakriteerien yhdistelmiä vertaillaan, ja suureille suureille B(t -> H+ b)xB(H+ -> tau nu) (kun H+:n massa on välillä 80-160 GeV) ja sigma(H+)xB(H+ -> tau nu) (kun H+:n massa on välillä 180-600 GeV), johdetaan ylärajat eri algoritmeja käyttäen. Top-kvarkin rekonstruoimisen havaitaan parantavan analyysin herkkyyttä ainoastaan kun delta phi -valintoja, jotka on suunniteltu vaimentamaan taustan QCD-osaa, ei käytetä törmäystapahtumien valinnassa. Koska delta phi -leikkausten käyttäminen parantaa analyysin herkkyyttä enemmän kuin top-kvarkin rekonstruointi, top-kvarkin rekonstruktion ja siihen perustuvan valintakriteerin lisäämistä törmäystapahtumien valintaprosessiin ei suositella.
