Abstract

This bachelor's thesis explores the significance of illustration style in motivating early readers. The aim of the study was to examine whether the difference between 2D and 3D illustrations affects children's interest and engagement with a story. The thesis is divided into a background research section and a production component, in which two visually distinct booklets were created based on the same story—one illustrated in two dimensions and the other in three. The background research discusses the challenges of learning to read, the pedagogical role of illustration, and how different illustration styles influence the reading experience. The produced booklets were analyzed from the perspective of visual communication. Although the materials were not tested with the target age group, the evaluation is based on existing research and the author’s observations. The thesis shows that illustration style affects the reading experience in different ways. 2D illustrations support story comprehension and leave room for imagination, while 3D illustrations create a visually rich world that can spark interest but may also draw attention away from the text. The study highlights the importance of visual choices in designing materials that support reading development. Illustration is not merely an aesthetic addition, but an active part of storytelling and the learning experience.
