Abstract

The thesis explores space utilization, material flows and factory layouts to improve the material flow efficiency of the factory, preparing the factory for a major production line implementation project. The study produces material flow layout alternatives for the factory using heuristics. The study uses a graph-theoretic systematic analysis of factory layouts using graph path sums to estimate total transport distances in a series of material movements, in addition to more qualitative methods. The study identifies areas of improvement regarding material flows, increasing awareness of the issues. The study provides layout plans for the factory to use as basis of future improvement actions, along with evidence that some layouts might perform better than others if implemented. Used methods perform well in comparing layouts but has limited precision in estimating absolute performance of a layout with regards to metrics such as total transport distance over a time period. The methods generalize well to other factories. Further topics for both industrial and academic research are identified.

Tämä diplomityö tutkii tilankäyttöä, materiaalivirtoja ja tehdaslayoutien suunnittelua tavoitteena parantaa tehtaan materiaalivirtojen tehokkuutta sekä valmistella tehdasta merkittävän uuden tuotantolinjan käyttöönottoon. Työssä tuotetaan heuristiikkaan perustuvia vaihtoehtoisia materiaalivirtojen layout-suunnitelmia tehtaalle. Työssä käytetään graafiteoreettista systemaattista analyysimenetelmää, jossa arvioidaan tehdaslayoutien kokonaiskuljetusmatkoja materiaalivirtojen reittisummien avulla, tukien laadullisempia analyysimenetelmiä. Työ tunnistaa kehityskohteita materiaalivirroissa ja lisää tietoisuutta havaitusta ongelmakohdista. Työ tuottaa tehdaslayout-suunnitelmia, joita tehdas voi hyödyntää tulevissa kehitystoimenpiteissä. Työ tuottaa näyttöä layoutien välisistä eroista toimivuuden suhteen. Käytetyt menetelmät toimivat hyvin layoutien vertailussa, mutta niiden tarkkuus on rajallinen layoutin absoluuttisen suorituskyvyn arvioinnissa, esim. kokonaiskuljetusmatkojen suhteen. Menetelmät yleistyvät hyvin myös muiden tehtaiden käyttöön. Lisäksi työssä tunnistetaan jatkotutkimusaiheita sekä teollisen että akateemisen tutkimuksen näkökulmasta.
