Abstract
This thesis explores the possibilities the industrial internet of things would have to offer in improving the maritime safety and security as well as reducing the costs associated with maintenance in the maritime industry. This thesis starts by defining the key definitions, developments and elements associated with the (industrial) internet of things and the maritime industry. After presenting the key concepts, the thesis moves on to examining the potential benefits the industrial internet of things would have to offer in terms of predictive maintenance and improving maritime safety and security in the maritime transport industry. The industrial internet of things can provide all actors of the maritime industry with tangible benefits and operational improvements. Smart sensors applied to critical phases of the maritime transport processes enable companies to prevent accidents, avoid unexpected downtime, schedule optimized windows for maintenance and allow compliance with international safety regulations in an efficient way. Implementing the industrial internet of things in the maritime industry offers countless benefits and possibilities, of which we will surely see more and more in the near future.Description
