Abstract

The Nordic electricity market has undergone rapid changes in recent years, with a significant increase in wind power generation. Since wind power is a weather dependent production source and difficult to forecast, Balance Responsible Parties (BRPs) with a high share of wind power in their portfolio tend to cause more imbalances. eSett Oy, whose main responsibility is imbalance settlement and invoicing, for the Nordic countries, also conducts market monitoring, which includes assessing the imbalance performance of BRPs using different tools. One of these tools that eSett uses to express how a BRP is performing with its imbalance is the imbalance key performance indicator (KPI). The imbalance KPI provides the user with a monthly traffic light-based assessment of the BRP’s imbalance performance. However, the current imbalance KPI does not take BRP’s production portfolios into account. This has resulted that the majority of BRPs with a high share of wind power to receive only red imbalance KPI scores making the imbalance KPI less relevant for these BRPs. The objective of this thesis is to evaluate whether the current imbalance KPI should take BRPs’ production portfolios into account to make it more fair and relevant, while also investigating other limitations of the current imbalance KPI. The study is based on a quantitative analysis of eSett’s internal BRP data from 2025. In the thesis, two improvements to the imbalance KPI are proposed and evaluated, adjusting the imbalance KPI based on the BRP’s portfolio using a portfolio index and removing yellow imbalance KPI scores that were assigned due to non-activity in a market balance area (MBA). The results show that portfolio adjustment alone had a limited impact, while removing the non-active BRPs had a significant impact on the imbalance KPI distribution.
