Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been rapidly evolving in the past years, mainly due to the sudden increase in large language models such as ChatGPT, which have made the use of AI more accessible to the public. As the AI field has exploded, so have the related ethical issues, meaning there is a growing demand for AI ethics services. These ethical issues include, for example, different biases, privacy-related matters, using AI for harmful activities, and the difficulties of answering questions regarding where the responsibility lies in case something goes wrong. In this thesis, qualitative research was conducted by organising five semi-structured interviews with industry experts to gain insight into the current market landscape of AI ethics, how it will evolve, and what kind of market opportunities are there. In addition, the interviews were used to clarify the role the regulations, guidelines and legislation play in shaping the AI ethics market. The thematic analysis that was conducted using the interviews found that there will likely be increased demand when the EU AI Act is confirmed, as many companies are expected to need help adjusting to the new legislation. Therefore, there is a market opportunity for AI ethics companies that provide services related to AI ethics expertise, such as educational sessions or helping the company implement their AI ethics strategy. However, it should be noted that it was also found that a company should never outsource the understanding of their actions. In addition, it was found that the best target group for AI ethics companies are small and medium-sized enterprises as they have fewer resources to hire a workforce specifically to deal with the ethical considerations of AI, for example. In comparison, larger enterprises will likely acquire the expertise by hiring people with the necessary skills.
