Abstract
The goal of this thesis work was to develop a device for mobile interpersonal haptic communication. Existing haptic and similar devices were explored. Different schemes of communication through touch were examined and classified. The product development process was used to develop a prototype which encompassed the idea of interpersonal haptic communication. Concept development was performed using different methods. An ideation session was held with Nokia employees to generate additional ideas for the prototype. The concepts were screened and a concept selection matrix was used to determine the chosen concept, discussion among the project team reinforced the decision. The chosen concept is a small head with movable facial. These movable facial features are mirrored on a partner device which uses a type of force feedback to transmit the haptic sensations from one user to another. The features and architecture of the Moody Dude prototype were determined with the project team. The detailed design was performed and included the design and analysis of the head rotate and the lip movement mechanisms. Finite element analysis of the structural components was also performed. The prototype construction was completed using rapid prototyping technologies. Six units of the working prototype were assembled to be used as demonstration devices.Description
