Abstract

Sustainability is becoming increasingly critical in the real estate sector, particularly for properties to maintain environmental, social, and economic responsibilities. This research offers valuable insights for shopping center owners and managers. The study identifies crucial sustainability attributes and assesses these attributes through a consumer survey and managerial interviews. A maturity model is utilized to evaluate the implementation of sustainability practices. The research identifies several key sustainability attributes, including certifications, energy consumption, waste management, water usage, transportation, accessibility, and economic performance. Through empirical studies involving a survey and management interviews, it provides a detailed analysis of consumer preferences and managerial practices concerning these attributes. The findings reveal gaps between consumer expectations and current managerial practices, highlighting areas for improvement and alignment. The thesis contributes to the literature by providing a structured approach to assessing sustainability in Finnish shopping centers and suggests practical measures for enhancing sustainability practices. This study supports shopping center managers in benchmarking and improving their sustainability efforts and adds to the broader discussion on sustainable real estate management.
