Abstract
This thesis examines how people utilize and perceive smart curbside management systems, with a focus on a booking platform that synchronizes the availability of curb space across European cities with user needs for reservations or check-ins. The research explores how such a platform can contribute to a more sustainable solution for demand fulfillment, as well as the perception of those who rely on it in their daily operations. The users in this study focus on logistics delivery drivers, as they are the primary curbside users in, as an effect of the logistic need’s growth in urban areas. The study combined two approaches: an analysis of platform usage records and a survey of both registered users and potential users such as logistics drivers. Not only does the study focus solely on technical aspects, but it also centers on user acceptance, measured through perceptions of usefulness, fairness, and convenience.
The findings reveal that activity levels vary across countries, weekdays, and vehicle types, reflecting cultural and operational differences. Most survey participants expressed positive opinions about the system, describing it as efficient and transparent. However, some issues remain, particularly regarding ease of use and communication, which affect whether users see the system as fair and reliable. More broadly, the thesis underlines the importance of designing a smart curbside booking platform that is both technically strong and user-friendly. Features such as real-time booking, digital permits, and confirmation messages help build trust, but better onboarding and clearer information are needed to improve adoption. It is also important that the system fits into the daily routines of logistics workers so that it supports, rather than disrupts, urban mobility. All in all, this research offers preliminary insights into the benefits and challenges of implementing smart curbside management platforms. It contributes to the ongoing discussion about how cities can balance efficiency, fairness, and convenience in managing shared spaces, especially when it comes to providing spaces for logistics needs while not disrupting the safety of urban mobility. Although this thesis is an exploratory study, it offers practical recommendations for platform development and lays the groundwork for future research on technology acceptance in smart curbside management platforms.
