Abstract

Euroopan vihreä vyöhyke (eng. The European Green Belt) on Jäämereltä Mustallemerelle ulottuva, yhteiseurooppalainen kansallispuistoista ja luonnonsuojelualueista koostuva, ekologinen verkosto, jonka tavoitteena on ylläpitää ja edistää luonnon monimuotoisuutta, tukea lajien sopeutumista ilmastonmuutokseen sekä edistää valtioiden välistä rajayhteistyötä. Suomi on osa Fennoskandian vihreää vyöhykettä, joka on Euroopan vihreän vyöhykkeen pohjoisin, Jäämereltä Suomenlahdelle ulottuva osa Suomen, Norjan ja Venäjän rajaseudulla. Itärajan tuntumassa sijaitseva Virolahden kunta tilasi Green Belt -infokeskussuunnitelman oppilastyönä Aalto-yliopistolta, pyrkimyksenään kehittää Fennoskandian vihreän vyöhykkeen tunnettavuutta ja Virolahden alueen luontomatkailua. Virolahden kunnan kanssa yhteistyössä hankkeessa ovat Leader Sepra ry, Metsähallitus sekä Sovetskyn kunta Venäjällä. Diplomityöni on Green Belt -infokeskussuunnitelma sekä kuvaus suunnitteluprosessista ja lopulliseen suunnitelmaan vaikuttaneista tekijöistä. Suunnitelman keskeinen lähtökohta on ollut luonnon monimuotoisuuden ja vihreän vyöhykkeen arvojen kunnioitus materiaalivalintojen kautta. Muita keskeisiä lähtökohtia suunnitelmalle ovat olleet rakennuspaikka, sen historia ja infokeskuksen potentiaali korostaa Virolahtea osana Euroopan vihreää vyöhykettä.

The European Green Belt is a Pan-European ecological network, extending from the Arctic Ocean to the Black Sea. Its aims are maintaining and promoting biodiversity, supporting the adaptation of species to climate change, and promoting cross-border nature conservation efforts. Finland a is part of the Green Belt of Fennoscandia, which is the northernmost part of the European Green Belt. The region extends from the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf of Finland, following the border line of Finland, Norway and Russia. Virolahti, a municipality on the eastern border of Finland, ordered an architectural design of a Green Belt information center from Aalto University as student work. The design was to raise awareness of the Green Belt of Fennoscandia and to promote nature-based tourism in the region. The municipality of Virolahti was accompanied by Leader Sepra ry, Metsähallitus and the municipality of Sovetsky, Russia, in its endeavor. My master’s thesis is a Green Belt information center design and a complementary process description, in which the factors influencing the final design are reflected. The central goal of the plan was to respect biodiversity and the values of the Green Belt through material choices. The site and its history were key factors in examining how the information center could emphasize Virolahti’s position as a prominent part of the European Green Belt.
